Film Noir, literally “dark film,” is a cinematic style used to describe some Hollywood films made in the 1940s and 1950s.  Films made in this style are usually black and white and are distinguished by pronounced shadows and notable lighting effects, as well as a dark, pessimistic tone. These films are often based on contemporary hardboiled detective fiction, but this style can be used in any genre of film. No matter the setting or genre, films in this style share a dark, cynical tone and bleak outlook. Come join us as we explore this style from its beginnings through the 1960s. Some of the stars featured include Humphrey Bogart, Joseph Cotten, Barbara Stanwyck, Tyrone Power, Robert Mitchum, Orson Welles, Charlton Heston, and Gregory Peck. Each film will be introduced by library staff, and followed by a brief discussion.
